Donwahi Foundation
About
This structure dedicated to contemporary creation hosts exhibitions, artist residencies and cultural events. The Donwahi Foundation is made up of three villas whose clean, minimalist lines evoke the avant-garde aesthetics of the 70s. An architectural ensemble nestled in a vast green setting, worthy of a David Hockney painting. The foundation was created in 2008 as a tribute to Charles Bauza Donwahi (1926-1997), a former minister under Félix Houphouët-Boigny, and an enlightened patron and promoter of the arts and culture, which he saw as vehicles for sharing and tolerance.
Estimated at over 5,000 pieces, the Sindika Dokolo collection is the most important private African collection of contemporary art, enriched by the Revue Noire photographic collection. The institution has also initiated the Abidjan Arts Actuels (AAA) concept, an annual event that takes stock of Ivorian creativity. It regularly exhibits works by Ivorian photographer Ananias Léki Dago, Cameroonian photographer Samuel Fosso, and contemporary African artists such as Ivorian sculptor Jems Koko Bi.
The foundation showcases both established and emerging artists, installations and performances, youth workshops and artist residencies. It's also a marvellously tranquil space, where you can enjoy a drink or work; on the terrace, in the elegant lounge bar or in the library, in absolute calm.
